ABOUT

Strong City Preservation Alliance, Inc.

The Strong City Preservation Alliance, Inc. is a 501 C(3) non-profit organization that was established in December of 2002.  It was the vision of the late Collene Slabaugh and the late Doug Jackson.  Both were passionate about saving the 1900 Opera House/Auditorium/Theater. Through their efforts a group of people joined together and established the alliance with the main objective to  preserve, restore, and protect the environment within Strong City, Kansas.  Special emphasis has been placed on the rehabilitation of the Opera House/Auditorium due to the condition of this building.

The Alliance has played an active role in assisting with conditions in Strong City.  In regards to the Opera House/Auditorium/Theater this group has completed the following:

  • Organized the removal of trash and the recycling of materials stored in the building.
  • Successfully submitted a Heritage Trust Fund grant to replace the roof and stabilize the walls of the structure.
  • Raised money to tuck point the stone walls.
  • Raised money to paint and repair the soffits.

Other efforts have also benefited from this organization.  The group successfully submitted a grant to clean and repaint the caboose in Caboose Park, worked with the rehabilitation of the historic Train Depot, and assisted with the 2016 Park Project.  Alliance members are involved in many aspects of Chase County including the Chase County Country Christmas events, Symphony in the Flint Hills, Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, and the Tallgrass National Preserve.
